French) who were deployed to defend Berlin and the Führerbunker. They were originally called: Légion des Volontaires Français contre le Bolchévisme, or LVF).
SS Charlemagne Grenadiere
Obersturmbannführer Mayol De Lupé (Military priest French Foreign Legion, Chaplain in the LVF). He was 63 years old.
They fiercely fought the Russian advance in Berlin, and together with elements of the Hitler Youth destroyed a great number of Russian tanks using panzerfausts. Hitler Youth fighters were boys, some of them, very young. During the battle of the Bulge, some American soldiers were distressed to find that their opponents were mere children… They were however some of the most tenacious combatants.

above from the movie “Der Untergang” because it reflects very well what was going on, as to the weaponry used by the HJ, and the young age of the combatants.

(looks to me as an 11–12 year old boy…)
The name of this Hitler Youth boy was Hans-Georg Henke. He was crying due to the effects of combat shock. Both his parents were dead. He’s just a kid who has seen the abyss and bursted into tears….
I am very glad to report that Hans-Georg Henke survived the war. He died of natural causes in 1997. Above is an image in his later years
Fighting in Berlin
Inferno in Berlin
Fighting was heavy in Berlin and by April 28, 108 soviet tanks had been destroyed….and counting. In the end SS Charlemagne soldiers were annihilated. From the 300 men or so, only a few men remained defending the Führerbunker even after Hitler’s suicide on April 30. After surrendering, some were summarily executed by French authorities. In one case, there was an interesting exchange between Free French General Philip Leclerc and a group of 10 Waffen SS-Charlemagne soldiers captured. The general asked them, “Why are you wearing German uniforms?” One of the captured men immediately and firmly replied, asking him “Why are you wearing an American uniform?” (Leclerc had served under the Americans and there were not many French uniforms available). All were shot on Leclerc’s orders without trial on May 8.
And now, another interesting case, but this time, about someone who when all was lost fought for the opposite reason namely, fighting for his people, only. We are talking about General Walther Wenck who being the youngest general in the German army, was known as the “Boy General”.
General Walther Wenck
General Wenck and Field Marshal Heinz Guderian
He liked pranks. Once he had an 88 mm cannon fire some rounds to scare a visiting General taking a bath in the bathtub, who jumped out of it, dripping wet to the amusement of Wenck.
Hitler was not known for his sense of humor, much less during those times, full of bad news from the front. In 1944 as Chief of Staff of Army Group South Ukraine, Wenck reported to Adolf Hitler about the situation and conditions in the area. He told Hitler, “As you can see my Führer, the Eastern Front is like a Swiss cheese…. Full of holes”. He was lambasted by his superior officers for using colloquial language. However, Hitler commended the “liveliness” of his report…..
He was initially in charge of Operation Solstice” 15-18 February 1945 involving a German counter attack which stopped Zhukov’s forces, delaying his offensive against Berlin for two months.
On 10 April 1945, Wenck was made the commander of the German Twelfth Army located to the west of Berlin. The area controlled by Wenck’s army to his rear and east of the Elbe River turned into a vast refugee camp for German civilians fleeing the path of the approaching Soviet forces. Wenck put great effort to provide food and lodging for these refugees. It was estimated that, the 12th Army was feeding more than a quarter million people every day.
Incidentaly, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, the longest-serving Foreign Minister of the Bundesrepublik and a key architekt of the 1990 German reunification was a soldier in Wenck’s army.(I once bumped into him in the first class cabin of an international Lufthansa flight, and no, I didn’t try to start a conversation with him).

On 22 April, Wenck’s 12th Army became Hitler’s last hope to save Berlin, so he ordered Wenck to stop attacking the Americans to his west and attack instead the Soviets encircling Berlin.
Wenck’s army, only recently formed, organized a violent counter attack which surprised the Russians surrounding the German capital. Wenck made initially some progress but was stopped outside Potsdam by overwhelming soviet forces.
Soviet units linked up on 27 April, encircling Berlin cutting off German forces inside Berlin from the rest of the country.
During the night of 28 April, Wenck reported to the OKH-Oberkommando des Herres in Fuerstenberg that his Twelfth Army had been forced to retreat along the whole front. However, Hitler specifically insisted on his original orders to Wenck.
General Wenck disobeyed Hitlers direct orders to attack Berlin from the Elbe River. Instead, he led an attack southeast of Berlin to provide a corridor for the remnants of the German Ninth Army and most of all, for the thousands upon thousands of civilians trapped by the soviets, looking to escape west of the Elbe and surrender to the Americans. Wenck had heard the distressing calls crying for help over open radio frequencies from the small remnants of the 9th Army, as well as from civilians, desperate to flee Berlin.
Wenck could have avoided further fighting and easily go over to the American lines and surrender to the Americans However, he knew what the trapped soldiers and civilians could expect from the soviets… General Wenck thought there was no way he would abandon them without trying his best to help them, even with his very limited resources in equipment and able men. Paraphrasing him, General Wenck told his men: “Comrades, you’ve got to go in once more, It’s not about Berlin, it’s not about the Reich or Hitler anymore.” Their task was to save people from the Russians.
Once again, exhausted as they were with very little ammunition left, the remnants of the 12th Army violently attacked the Russians encircling Berlin to punch a hole and create a life-saving corridor. Wenck called to the people of Berlin, telling them “Hurry up we are waiting for you!” It was a non-coded broadcasted radio message ensuring thus that all military units and civilians could hear it and move to safety. It also meant that the soviets could also hear it, and thus use all their military might to destroy the corridor created by the 12th Army
Very soon, Soviet forces began piercing the German lines. General Wenck impassionedly called upon his men again to “Hold the corridor! Once again, German forces threw themselves in bitter, furious counterattacks to keep the line of retreat open.
This huge flood of humanity began pushing west towards safety. By the time the men of the 12th Army were forced to retreat, close to three hundred thousand soldiers and civilians had made it to safety.
Walther Wenck in his later years
These fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters both young and old were saved from horrendous torment and possibly death by the sacrifice of General Wenck’s men of the 12th Army. Each life the 12th Army gave saved dozens of lives, and they did it, not for the Reich, certainly not for Hitler but for their own people. According to a report, a soldier of the 12th Army later remarked that he and his comrades felt a “feeling of loyalty, a sense of responsibility and comradeship” while trading their own lives to save their comrades and thousands of civilians.
Compare this attitude with that of the SS-Charlemagne unit who were not figh ty dolla sign you could be my lover ing for “their people” as they were not even born in Germany…! They fought exclusively for Hitler to the bitter end, that is, they were either

(17 People Likes) What was your favorite item in your bedroom as a teenager?

my bedroom was a twin mattress set that I kept on the floor and had converted into a day bed using a bunch of large throw pillows, an antique white wicker rocking chair from my great-grandmother’s house that was great for reading in, a dresser that was hidden in a closet (I had two walk-in closets with folding louvered doors that took up an entire wall of my bedroom), a very large hope chest I kept on one end of my bed, some boxes I painted and kept my Seventeen magazines in (I’d had subscriptions throughout high school), a mirror that seemed to be an antique and had probably been originally attached to a dressing table at one point, a three-tier hanging basket was suspended from my ceiling and held a bunch of stuffed animals and some purple and gold pom poms (high school colors), and a 1930s era Philco radio cabinet that no longer had a radio in it (also from my great-grandmother’s house).
On the radio cabinet, I kept my dual cassette tape player with radio (aka boombox), and my cassettes were held inside. I used to have a photo of it with a dozen red roses added to the things I kept on it but I can’t seem to find it to share. I had an old pink lace triangle scarf I kept there as a doily that my grandmother used to wear to church. On the hope chest, I kept a large black lace shawl with a bunch of things on top that I had collected as well as a set of tarot cards and a crystal ball; it was set up as a sort of altar. Somewhere in my room, I was using a cow pelvis I had found in one of the pastures near the house as a way to hold books or albums from back when I had a record player.
I think my favorite item in the room was probably the radio cabinet. It was just a really cool piece of furniture that no one else I knew had and I liked the juxtaposition of it with my boombox. I was a huge fan of The Waltons and they had a radio in the living room of their house that was such a big part of their lives it was incorporated in the opening credits of the show. I wanted t

(73 People Likes) Is the story of the Annabelle doll real? If it is, then what is the proof?

Lorraine Warren’s spooky museum of trophies. Director James Wan redesigned Annabelle for the movie, giving her a much more disturbing appearance, but in real life Annabelle was just your run of the mill Raggedy Ann doll.
Donna got Annabelle from her mother in 1970; mom bought the used doll at a hobby store. Donna was a college student at the time, and living with a roommate named Angie, and at first neither thought the doll was anything special. But over time they noticed Annabelle seemed to move on her own; at first it was really subtle, just changes in position, the kinds of things that could be written off as the doll being jostled. But the movement increased, and within a few weeks it seemed to become fully mobile. The girls would leave the apartment with Annabelle on Donna’s bed and return home to find it on the couch.
Their friend Lou hated the doll. He thought there was something deeply wrong with it, something evil, but the girls were modern women and didn’t believe that sort of thing. There must be an explanation, they reasoned. But soon Annabelle’s actions got even weirder – Donna began to find pieces of parchment paper in the house with messages written on it. “Help us,” they would say, or “Help Lou.” Just to make the whole thing that much creepier nobody in the house had parchment paper. Where the hell was it coming from?
The escalation continued. One night Donna returned home to find Annabelle in her bed, with blood on her hands. The blood – or some sort of red liquid – seemed to be coming from the doll itself. That was enough; Donna finally agreed to bring in a medium. The sensitive sat with the doll and told the girls that long before their apartment complex had been built there had been a field on that property. A seven year old girl named Annabelle Higgins had been found dead in that field. Her spirit remained, and when the doll came into the house the girl latched on to it. She found Donna and Angie to be trustworthy. She just wanted to stay with them. She wanted to be safe with them.
Being sweet, nurturing types – they were both nursing students – Donna and Angie agreed to let Annabelle stay with them. And that’s when all hell broke loose.
Lou started having bad dreams, dreams where Annabelle was in his bed, climbing up his leg as he lay frozen, sliding up his chest to his neck and closing her stuffed hands around his throat, choking him out. He would wake up terrified, head pounding like all blood had been cut off to his brain. He was freaking out. He was worried about the girls.
A few days later he and Angie were hanging out, planning a road trip, when they heard someone moving around in Donna’s room. They froze – was it a break in? Was there an intruder in the apartment? Lou crept over to the door, listening to rustling within. He threw open the door and everything was as it should be – except Annabelle was off the bed and sitting in a corner. As he approached the doll Lou was consumed with that feeling, a burning on the back of the neck that indicates someone was staring at you and he spun around. Nobody was there. The room was empty. And then sudden pain on his chest. He looked in his shirt and saw a series of raking claw marks, rough ditches in his flesh that burned. He knew Annabelle had done it.
The weird claw marks began healing almost immediately. They were totally gone in two days. They were like no wounds any of them had ever seen before. They knew they needed more help, and they turned to an Episcopalian priest, who in turned called in Ed and Lorraine Warren.
It didn’t take the Warrens long to come to their conclusion: there was no ghost in this case. There was an inhuman spirit – a demon – attached to the doll. But they warned that the doll wasn’t possessed; demons don’t possess things, only people. It was clinging to the doll, manipulating it, in order to give the impression of a haunting. The target was really Donna’s soul.
A priest performed an exorcism on the apartment and the Warrens took possession of the doll. They put it in a bag and began the long drive home; Ed agreed to stay off the highways because there was a concern that the demon might fuck with the car, and at 65 miles an hour that would be disastrous. And sure enough, as they drove on the back roads, the engine kept cutting out, the power steering kept failing and even the brakes gave them trouble. Ed opened the bag, sprinkled the doll with holy water and the disturbances stopped… for the moment.
Ed left the doll next to his desk; it began levitating. That happened a couple of times and then it seemed to just quit, finally laying quiet. But in a couple of weeks Annabelle was back to her old tricks; she started appearing in different rooms in the Warren home. Sensing that the doll was ramping back up the Warrens called in a Catholic priest to exorcise Annabelle. The priest didn’t take it seriously, telling Annabelle “You’re just a doll. You can’t hurt anyone!” Big mistake: on his way home the priest’s brakes failed, and his car was totaled in a horrible accident. He survived.
Eventually the Warrens built a locked case for Annabelle, and she resides there to this day. The locked case seems to have kept the doll from moving around, but it seems like that whatever terrible entity is attached to it is sti
